Red Wings could play in last game at Yankee Stadium

Detroit Free Press
The Red Wings could play an outdoor game against the N.Y. Rangers as the final event ever at Yankee Stadium next season, according to a report in Monday’s New York Daily News.

Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios and forward Kris Draper said after Monday’s practice at Joe Louis Arena that they had rumors about an outdoor game being played at Yankee Stadium.

“I heard it’s a done deal already,” Chelios said. “I heard Detroit’s playing that game. The last event actually in Yankee Stadium."

Chelios said it would be “awesome.”

“Not just because of the history of Yankee Stadium, but to be able to be a part of the last event ever to be played is going to be something special,” he said.

Hockey tickets, anyone?

Detroit News:
"Times are tough. Tough enough, in fact, that the Red Wings, the standard-bearers for success in the NHL the last two decades, have turned to a teetering expansion franchise for help.

In an attempt to halt sagging attendance at Joe Louis Arena and reclaim the 'Hockeytown' crown Sports Illustrated unceremoniously bequeathed to the Minnesota Wild last week, the Wings have hired a new vice president of business affairs. Enter Steve Violetta, who leaves a similar position he held with the Nashville Predators?

'It's Hockeytown instead of Honkytonk town, right?' Violetta joked Monday, shortly after meeting the staff at Joe Louis Arena."

Wings Overcome To Tie Series At 2

Detroit News Online:
"Maybe it was poetic justice for the Red Wings.

Having outplayed the San Jose Sharks for most of the game, but still finding themselves trailing, the Wings finally got a few breaks to go their way.

Robert Lang scored with 33.1 seconds left in regulation time, and Mathieu Schneider scored on the power play in overtime to give the Wings a dramatic 3-2 victory.

'We earned that victory tonight,' said Schneider, who scored his second goal of the playoffs at 16:04 of overtime. 'We battled all night long. That second goal they scored was pretty fluky and it easily could have gotten us down. But we kept at it.'"

More honors for Steve Yzerman

Granholm Declares Saturday as "Steve Yzerman Day"
Steve Yzerman was honored on the ice for the second straight Detroit Red Wings home game.

Gov. Jennifer Granholm declared Saturday as "Steve Yzerman Day," more than a week after Yzerman's No. 19 jersey was retired. The state did not honor Yzerman on Jan. 2 because it was the national day of mourning for former President Gerald Ford, who was raised in Michigan.

Granholm honored Yzerman "on behalf of young people everywhere who could never come to Joe Louis Arena and to those watching on TV for being an unbelievable role model," during a brief presentation before Detroit played the Chicago Blackhawks.

WINGS CORNER: Chelios' next game will be a Great One

WINGS CORNER: Chelios' next game will be a Great One:
"Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios was a healthy scratch on Saturday for the first time this season.

When he next plays, probably Wednesday night when the Wings host the Calgary Flames, Chelios will tie Wayne Gretzky for 12th place on the NHL's all-time games played list.

The schedule sets up for him to pass Gretzky on Thursday when the Wings visit Chelios' old team, the Chicago Blackhawks."

Wings resembling past teams again

Wings resembling past teams again - 10/30/06 - The Detroit News Online:
"A week ago many folks were wondering if the Red Wings were ever going to win another game.

They had lost three consecutive games on the road, the special teams were a mess, the star players weren't playing well, and they had to play three tough games in four nights during the coming week.

So, all the Wings did was win all three. Suddenly, the Wings are only two points from Central Division-leading Nashville, and resembling the Wings that Detroit fans have come to know."

Red Wings Kick Off Road Trip with Win

Red Wings Kick Off Road Trip with Win - DetroitHockey.Net:
"The Detroit Red Wings started their four-game western road trip with a 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings Monday night. The win extended their unbeaten streak against the Kings to 12 games.

Detroit netminder Chris Osgood, making his first appearance of the season, made 22 saves on 23 shots to earn the victory.

Los Angeles scored the game's first goal on a miscue by Osgood. Handcuffed on a shot by Aaron Miller, Osgood let the rebound fall to the top of the crease. Former Red Wing Sean Avery and rookie Anze Kopitar rushed in to put it past the sprawling Detroit goalie with only 45 seconds remaining in the first period."

On the Wings: Wings 4, Rangers 3

Wings 4, Rangers 3

The Wings' first game on NBC in years turned out to be a success, as they beat their old rival, the New York Rangers, 4-3 downtown at the Joe. It was a well-played game by both teams and definitely an entertaining one, as the Rangers kept it interesting right to the end.

On the Wings: Wings 3, Stars 6

The Wings blew a three-goal lead, allowing six unanswered goals in the second and third periods, to lose 6-3 at the Joe today. In contrast to the trend of just a few games ago, Detroit came out of the gates flying in the first but faltered after scoring their second and third goals early in the second period. The Stars took advantage of this and dominated for the next 35 minutes or so, getting an important win for their franchise.

The Wings showed us their two sides tonight: in the first and early goings of the second, it was the crisp-passing, game-dominating team we love to see so much. In the rest of the second and all of the third, they were the sloppy-passing, on-their-heels team we see all too often. In a month where that first team needs to show up more often than not, it is extremely disappointing to see the Wings play their "B" or even "C" game.

On the Wings: Wings 2, Wild 4

I was able to watch some of this game tonight (2nd period) on OLN.If you are a Red Wings fan, you will want to lose yourself on this page. Matt Saler has put together a very thorough and timely account of the team. Here's a snip of his game summary:
The Wings began January very much on the wrong foot, losing 4-2 in un-inspiring fashion to Minnesota in front of their home fans. Detroit looked flat for the majority of the night and were out-hustled and out-worked by the Wild all night, despite finishing the game with a season-high 45 shots.

Chris Osgood again made the start for the Wings and played well, though two of the three goals he allowed were fairly weak. He had little chance on the first, however, which came from the slot off a quick centering pass from behind the net. Andrei Zyuzin was left all along out front and was handed an easy one-timer goal by the Red Wing defense at 5:55 of the first period.

The Wild scored again a little over a minute later, this time from Filip Kuba, who took a shot from the point. The goal came soon after a defensive-zone faceoff for the Wings and immediately after a television break so it's not like they didn't have time to prepare.

Being outside the Detroit media market as I am, Matt's site is a daily read for me to keep up with things happening in Hockeytown. Thanks Matt.
