Record Michigan voter turnout tops 5 million

Michigan voters turned out in record numbers for Tuesday's election, topping 5 million for the first time in state history, elections officials said Wednesday.

But the total unofficial tally, 5,094,558, was slightly below projections. And the portion of eligible voters who participated in 2008 -- about 68% -- was still below highs set for presidential elections in the 1960s.
In 2004, 4,875,692 Michiganders voted in the Bush vs. Kerry election, a 64.7% turnout.
